Oliver Jeffers

This man is probably my biggest influence right now. Absolutely love his books and got his latest book "Stuck" for Christmas. Having my own studio in New york would be nice too..

Therapy today article - "Can't pay, won't pay"

For college we've to illustrate digitally 2 articles in Therapy today magazine. 2 from each article (so 4 altogether). This is one from "Can't pay, won't pay" article which talks about councillors being undervalued and cuts from different reasons. Mine for example is showing how the IAPT scheme (phone and email self help scheme) could be cutting councillor jobs. More images on these articles to come soon!

(Belated) Illustration Friday: Stripes

Been so busy with college work I finally got round to finishing my first illustration friday topic. First thing that came to mind from the subject "stripes" was a zebra but tried to find a way to make it a bit more interesting.

New 20 minute diary pics

More 20 minute diary pics I've done in class from something that's happened in my week. The past weeks have included some interesting things - drawing childhood toys (my little pony), new headphones, snowing on halloween with my family in the states, my birthday on the coolest date of the year (11/11/11) and random dreams (that I have alot!) of snakes biting me and the venom going into my veins and also my tutor glen cracking his knuckles.
I would upload these on their own and explain them every week but because they're so small I think they look a bit lonely all by themselves. I think they look much better grouped together really.
Well that's all for now folks :)

Christmas card print

I did this print earlier this year as part of 1st year but I think it would make a good christmas card this year. It was the first time I'd ever tried lino printing and I think it worked out pretty well. Turns out although it's quite fiddly (and your likely to cut yourself which I did) I quite like it!

Remixing music

So here's a little bit of what I've been busy working away at college. For a group project we were asked to create a campaign to show how re-mixing, re-recording etc music was ruining original music. My very lovely group decided to go with my idea of "Losing Soul Music". Which basically describes how remixes take away what original music is truely about (Its purpose) and therefore loses its soul. Each of us came up with an idea of how a musical instrument could lose its soul (which was a very complicated process but we persevered and got there in the end!). Mine was disappearing, Second poster was dripping colour and lastly a broken instrument.
These are pictures of from my poster. I created a collage of different live music flyers and tickets I found and cut out what I thought was an iconic symbol of music (the guitar) from this. My message was trying to show that re -mixing has taken away the soul of orginal, live music, and therefore nothing left at all.

Scotland on Sunday brief

The Scotland on Sunday recently asked us to illustrate the issue of menopause from a male perspective. My thinking behind this idea was the emotional aspect from the letter - that there was two people in the relationship but both struggling with how to deal with the issue. In particular the man trying to get through to his wife but doesnt know how to. The door was supposed to be a metaphor seperating them. The knocked over books and broken/slanted frame was to represent how things around them, imparticular their family life and everything around them was falling apart because of this.
The image on the left is my original which I wasn't happy with and felt it needed alot more to it so I re - did it and felt it looked alot better.
Mine wasn't picked unfortunately but always good for the experience

Sunday 16 October 2011

I'm much more of a free hand drawer but I really wanted to try out some of the techniques I've learnt in photoshop lately on one of my 20 min pics. See what it's like when I try outwith my usual style. Don't think it turned out too badly considering. What do you think?

20 minute diary pics

Every Wednesday in class we have the chance to draw something that has happened to us during our week. Usually I find it quite a challenge to get it all done in time but I think I'm getting better (hopefully!). These are a selection of pictures i've done over the summmer and since we've come back to college.

Zoo posters

3 zoo posters I created for my graded unit. Each poster was to represent conservation, education and appeal as a visitor attraction. Idid this by using the animals and them calling out to people for different things. Penguin - appealing as a visitor attraction, Lion - Conservation and the kookaburra - education

Song lyric project

Based on the song lyrics by coldplay " You belong with me, not swallowed in the sea"

The Lion, the witch and the wardrobe poster

For college we had to base 3 posters - portrait, objects and buildings on a play. I chose The lion, The witch and these are my final 3 posters which I'm very happy with.
